Why Some Disinfectants Feel Inconsistent
It’s a pattern that creates a lot of second-guessing.
One day, everything seems to work. The space feels controlled. The results look right. There’s no reason to question the process.
Then another day, using the same product, the same dilution, and the same routine, it doesn’t feel the same at all.
The outcome is different.
That leads to a natural conclusion:
Something must be off with the disinfectant.
But what’s happening isn’t the product changing.
It’s the environment changing underneath it.
In a real facility, kennel sanitation isn’t being applied into a controlled setting. They’re being applied into conditions that are constantly shifting—often in ways that aren’t immediately visible.
Organic material is the first part of that.
Urine residue, fecal matter, body oils, and biofilm don’t remain consistent from one day to the next. Some days there’s less present at the surface. Other days there’s more sitting just below it or embedded in seams and porous areas.
When disinfectant is applied, the first thing it interacts with is that existing load.
And that interaction affects how much of it remains active.
On lighter days, it can carry further and feel like it’s holding well.
On heavier days, more of it is consumed earlier, which changes how long it remains effective.
So the same product produces a different result because it’s entering a different condition.
Why Kennel Sanitation Results Shift Day to Day
Water plays a role in that as well.
Many systems are tested under controlled conditions, often around 200 ppm hardness. In actual facilities, water hardness is frequently higher, and that alters how chemistry behaves—reducing stability and effectiveness without anything visibly changing in the process.
pH adds another layer.
It doesn’t shift gradually. It moves on a logarithmic scale, which means small changes in dilution water or residue on surfaces can change the chemical form of what’s being applied. That affects how it performs in real time.
Then there’s the environment itself.
Temperature, humidity, and activity don’t stay constant. As the day progresses, those factors change how quickly reactions occur and how much material is being released from surfaces.
Warmer, more humid conditions can increase both the activity of what’s present and the rate at which chemistry is used up.
At the same time, contamination is being moved continuously.
Dogs move through runs. Staff move through the building. Airflow shifts. All of that lifts, carries, and redeposits material across the space, so what one area is receiving is different from another.
There are also places where disinfectants don’t fully reach.
Seams, porous flooring, fabrics, and drains hold material below the surface. Those areas continue feeding the environment regardless of what’s being applied on top.
So even when surfaces look improved, the system underneath continues to contribute.
Why the Same Routine Produces Different Results
That’s why the experience feels inconsistent.
The product is behaving the same way.
The conditions it’s being applied into are not.
So the outcome shifts based on what’s present, how it’s interacting, and how much of the chemistry remains active after that interaction.
And until those underlying conditions are fully addressed, the pattern doesn’t stabilize.
It improves → it varies → it returns.
Because the contamination is still there, and effective kennel sanitation depends on reaching it. Until then, it’s being redistributed, reactivated, or reintroduced over time.
